Knowledge Management in the past decades was aiming for collecting, storing and categorizing knowledge. In my eyes it failed – Huge databases of dead documents have been built with tremendous effort and very little outcome. Usability, maintenance or accessibility – it just did not work – not to mention the never reached ROI (=return of investment). Our perfectionism and demand of having something „final“ before releasing or even publishing just adds another big hurdle for knowledge to become visible (Do you know those topic_final_v3.docx or topic_final_last_version.pptx files ;-))

We can not afford anymore to hide knowledge in databases, eMails or archives – only if we grant easy access to it, we will be able to develop answers for our complex present and future. Building a „learning organization“ and collaborating across borders would be a sustainable way for future demands and challenges.

Knowledge does not need to be „managed“ – it needs to „come alive“ by USING it, SHARING it, adding to it. Social Media gives us great opportunities to do exactly that – there are just some pre-conditions to make this happen. With this Infographic I tried to build an „action – effect – chain“ which should explain how it could work a lot better.
It is a starting point – hoping for your ideas, feedback and help!

In a corporate environment – it is essential, that this new way of sharing is supported by leaders – Human Resources would be the right partner to role model and engage this new behavior:

I really liked this infographic! It’s very easy to follow and to understand!
I can only agree with the content.
In my point of view, everyone should be in. If one person is out we already have a type of silo.
I agree with Edson as well.
Making it easy for information to die and to be uploaded is important.
In additon, I see that can be helpful if the social media platform is user friendly, inviting to click and share. People respond better to that than to logical reasons most of the times.

Thaks for sharing and making this possible!

A question: How many people have to take part in such an intra-social-network to make it work? Is a Company with 250 employees big enough? Or is there a „critical mass“?
      Ok, 3 Questions.

Hi Robert, in my experience size does matter – the more active, diverse and sharing – the more value… but: collaboration, communication, sharing, liking and feedback via ESN starts being effective already with 10 people – here just one example: https://harald-schirmer.de/2013/11/21/infographic-social-business-value-example/

100% agree, nevertheless, current known open social networks have created a „shadow“ about this term „social working“ in most of people, changing the mindset is not easy but also not impossible.
I see important points that help:
    – simplifying the death of info
    – simplifying the upload of information

    Thanks Harald for leading.
